OCEAN GROVE GABLE HOUSE

The client came to us with a brief for a new multi-generational forever home with a comfortable and casual coastal feel which was like music to our ears.

In an area which is increasingly inundated with overblown development, we opted instead to draw on the familiar Bellarine Peninsula beach house model of the 1960’s and 70’s that we remembered from childhood. Things are kept simple and modest, but with some generous spaces where they’re needed most.

The classic gable form adds to the streetscape and opens up to the north, with highlight windows filling the living spaces with sun throughout the day. We dealt with the difficult orientation [north towards the front of the block] by introducing a central courtyard which becomes a sheltered outdoor dining area and allows north sun into the rear wing of the house.
