Bike Matters, Torquay

The crew at independent cycling retailer Bike Matters asked us to help out with converting a plain concrete warehouse into their new Torquay HQ, and we jumped at the opportunity to work with fellow passionate bike lovers with a great vision for all things two-wheeled on the Surf Coast and beyond.

A raw palette of plywood joinery, painted concrete masonry and rough-sawn timber battens provides a visual contrast with the owners’ rich large-format photography and recycled industrial fittings, and creates a warm and welcoming interior.

Staying true to Bike Matters’ independent ethos, we deliberately steered away from using generic shop-fittings. We developed innovative display solutions like a custom peg-and-plywood wall, and moveable podiums on industrial castors, which can be re-configured to create different layouts throughout the shop.

Working along with the landscape architect, we added a sunny deck surrounded by indigenous planting at the entry to the shop, which becomes a great place to spill out and enjoy a well-earned coffee after a Surf Coast ride.
